Join us to celebrate the first day of spring with 108 Sun Salutations accompanied by master percussionist Robbie Kinter. Doors open at 5:30, and we'll start promptly at 6pm. Come early if you've never participated in a 108 Sun salutation celebration before, to give yourself plenty of time to get settled and review the simple form before we begin.
Anyone is welcome to join. At 5:45, I will review the sun salutation, as well as show participants who are not accustomed to them, how to perform them gently -- and where appropriate, in a modified way that avoids unnecessary strain.
Students may rest, watch, and resume whenever they wish during the celebration. It is not necessary to do all 108 sun salutations in order to enjoy the awesome shared group energy and music.
I will call out each salutation, breath by breath, followed by some restorative finishing poses and a period of rest.
Robbie Kinter is the Music Director for VCU’s Department of Dance and Choreography. He has created over 50 scores for dance including works for Amaranth Contemporary Dance, Robert Battle, Clancy Works, and Starr Foster Dance. Two of his collaborations -- Deconstructed Dialogues, with Martha Curtis, and Them, with Frances Wessells, have been selected for the Choreographers Showcase at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, University of Maryland. His video dance tantrum was selected for the 18th Annual International Screendance Festival. Robbie created sound design for An Oak Tree at Firehouse Theatre; Medea Myth at VCU; and with Ryan Jones Equus and John for Cadence Theatre.
Robbie Kinter also plays drums for the music ensemble Rattlemouth.
This is sure to be a blast, with R. Kinter providing a groovy beat to help us along. No experience necessary, but if it will be your first time participating in a 108 Sun Salutation celebration, please feel welcome to contact me for info prior to coming.
All my best,
Robbie Norris, Owner, Richmond City Yoga
